In Shadow Piece(s): Chance-Based Responses in Clay, seven ceramic artists—Maggie Adams, Alexis C. Brunkow, E.C. Comstock, Tomo Ingalls, Vanessa Romo, Jennifer Schumacher Waller, and Kurt Tomerlin—respond to a single set of written instructions: Shadow Piece (1963) by Japanese Fluxus artist Meiko Shiomi. Originally conceived as a poetic performance score, Shadow Piece invites a meditation on the presence and movement of shadow in space and time.

Join Kristi Bissell for a crash course in incorporating tempting caramelized flavor into two classic Swedish baked goods.

In this virtual class, Kristi will demo a caramelized-almond-topped Tosca Cake and a delicious but straightforward caramel cookie, both approachable ways to incorporate caramel into baked goods at home. $25 ($20 ASI member)

Beets may be a divisive ingredient, but beet lovers know they can provide great color, flavor, and nutrition in a range of recipes, and they become especially valuable in the colder months.

Join Kristi Bissell as she demonstrates a trio of Nordic-inspired recipes from her blog, True North Kitchen, featuring both golden and red beets in both classic and surprising dishes. $25 ($20 ASI member).

The class will be recorded and made available to all registrants for one month after the class date.

Join Nichole Accettola, author of Scandinavian from Scratch: A Love Letter to the Baking of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, in a virtual class exploring two different celebratory buns traditionally eaten on Fat Tuesday: Denmark’s fastelavnsboller and Sweden’s semlor.

Nichole will discuss and demonstrate her approaches to two different doughs, fillings, and toppings for these midwinter treats, sending students home with two recipes to tackle. $25 ($20 ASI member)

Make a colorful and fluffy Easter Egg ready for imaginative play or display in this intergenerational class!

Kids and their special adults will each shape and decorate their own easter eggs using the magical technique of needle felting. Using a needle to poke colorful wool into place is a fun and easy craft for all ages!

All skill levels welcome. This program is for children ages 9-17 and an adult. $55 adult/child pair ($45 ASI member adult/child pair) + $20 materials fee payable to instructor.

Make a garland of hearts just in time for Valentine’s Day!

Jen Newburg will lead kids and their special adults through the process of shaping and decorating a set of wool hearts using the technique of needle felting and then string them together into a garland.

This program is for one kid (ages 5-10) and one adult to attend together, and each work on their own projects. All skill levels welcome. $55 adult/child pair ($45 ASI member adult/child pair) + $20 materials fee payable to the instructor.

Slöjd Studio is a monthly program for young makers (grades 3–5). Participants will practice slöjd techniques and explore new tools as they continue to nurture their lifelong love of handcraft.

Hone your skills with hand tools in the Scandinavian green woodcarving tradition while making unique handmade tableware.

Over eight sessions, Paul Linden will guide students with prior hand carving experience through the nuances of various hand tools to produce several low-relief wooden plates or trays.

Suitable for carvers ages 18+ with a strong interest in building further expertise with planes, chisels, gouges, and more. $295 ($275 ASI member) + $50 materials fee payable to instructor.

This beginner course will introduce you to the Scandinavian-style flat plane carving tradition with a lesson on basic knife grips and carving techniques.

Come carve and paint a couple of sweet miniature wooden vegetables for imagination play, display, or even making a statement necklace.

Suitable for ages 16+ or 11–15 alongside a registered adult. $70 ($60 ASI member) + $25 materials fee payable to instructor.

This quick intro class covers the basics of using a carving knife and working with “green” or fresh wood while making a small butter spreader.
