Try embroidering with linen! This class offers an overview of basic free-hand embroidery stitches as students decorate a small floral motif on linen.

Students will head home with a small sampler ready to display and inspiration to continue stitching at home.

Join potter Kim of Imokim Pottery to decorate a ceramic dish with a carved and painted design while enjoying a beverage from FIKA Café.

Students will decorate pre-formed dishes, perfect for snacks or trinkets. After class, the pieces will be glazed with a top clear coat and fired before returning to ASI for pick up a few weeks later.

Starting with Slöjd is a monthly program for early elementary children. Participants explore new tools, materials, and skills that prepare them for a lifelong love of handcraft.

These drop-off programs are suitable for students in grades K–2. $20 ($15 ASI member)

Instructor Anna Ruhland will teach students how to collect nature objects, such as grass and leaves, and use them in printing. Print nature objects onto a canvas bag to create a useful and unique project!

Makers Night is a monthly opportunity every third Thursday for anyone interested in craft to work in community in our Berglund Studio Classroom or in the summer, on our beautiful front lawn! Try out Scandinavian-style woodcarving in this hands on workshop.

Students will work with fresh “green” wood, a carving knife, and other hand tools to make some simple kitchen tools. This is a terrific introduction to carving for anyone hoping to carve with spoons, bowls, or other green wood projects.

Note that carving requires good hand strength and f lexibility. Suitable for ages 16+, or ages 14-15 with a registered adult. $115 ($100 ASI member) + $30 materials fee payable to instructor.

Try out the art of woodcut printmaking in this oneday class!

Students will choose an image or sketch before class, then learn how to prepare a wood block, carve their image, and print multiple copies of a 4×6-inch single-color design.

Taking inspiration from Nordic herbal traditions, spend an afternoon exploring generational wisdom and knowledge of summer herbs and wild foods.

Students will make several herbal preparations while grounding their learning in modern understandings of herbal medicine and the Norse mythology and oral traditions of Sunna, the Norse Sun goddess and healer.

Try out nålbinding, a global textile tradition that has been especially well preserved in Scandinavia.

In this intro class, students will make their own nålbinding needle (the only tool necessary in this highly portable craft), explore about the history of nålbinding, and learn some basic stitches to start a bracelet or armband. You’ll leave with everything you need to continue this craft at home.

Students will decorate a prepared ceramic luminaries with carved designs in this workshop, then pick a color to complement their design. The luminaries will be fired and returned to ASI for pickup after class.
