About your instructor:
Katharine Schmidt has twenty years of experience as a ceramic sculptor and college professor. She holds an MFA from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. You have likely seen her work in exhibits around the region.

About this class:
Do you love clay and want to build natural-looking figure and animal sculptures? Do you want a chance to let your imagination run wild under the guidance an experienced artist and teacher?

We will be working with wet clay on the potter’s wheel for the first six classes.

During Session 7, we will decorate bisque-fired forms and load the kiln for the first of several firings.

During Session 8, we will fire the raku kiln, and while the kiln temperature rises to the proper level, we will glaze the last of the functional pieces.

This class’s curriculum is student-driven.  Perhaps you want to focus on larger forms, adding lids, handles, and spouts; we have you covered. Your instructor, Joe Chomyn, will guide you towards improving and enhancing your pottery wheel proficiency.

There will also be a focus on safe procedures, proper preparation, and maintenance of the studio spaces. The goal is to come away with increasing confidence in your ability to work independently as a potter and to enjoy yourself in the process!

Fire Arts Inc is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization.  We opened our doors in 2004 and achieved non-profit status in 2006.  Our mission is “to provide a place for 3-Dimensional artists to create their art and develop their careers; to foster appreciation for the arts in the community; to foster cultural awareness, creativity and positive self-esteem with outreach programs”.

FAI continues to be managed and maintained by a dedicated group of artists who volunteer their service.  Our 8200 sq ft building is primarily allocated to studio spaces, augmented by two small office spaces, and a showroom providing our artists with economic and exhibition opportunities.

Sculptors, potters and jewelers find our spaces flexible and our environment conducive to their creative growth. The public regularly attends our exhibits, tours, workshops and lectures.
