Quiet Reserve: Stitching an Ambitious New Woman explores embroidery at H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College as both artistic expression and career training. Featuring “art needlework” inspired by nature and daily life, the exhibition highlights how Newcomb expanded opportunities for Southern women in the decorative arts and promoted ideals of the “New Woman.”

The Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane University is a dynamic academic museum that builds on the legacy of H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College, the first degree-granting coordinate college for women in the United States. Located in the Woldenberg Art Center on Tulane’s campus, the museum presents innovative exhibitions and public programs that connect art, scholarship, and community. Its mission centers on fostering creative exchange, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and civic dialogue through socially engaged art and design.
The museum preserves and advances research on Tulane’s art collections, which include more than 8,000 works ranging from historic paintings and photography to contemporary art and design. It also holds the world’s largest collection of objects from the renowned Newcomb Pottery enterprise, created between 1895 and 1940.
Through exhibitions, educational initiatives, and community partnerships, the Newcomb Art Museum serves as a gateway between the university and the wider New Orleans region while honoring the artistic contributions of women and promoting dialogue around the social issues of our time.

Located in the Ogden Museum Store, the Center for Southern Craft & Design (CSCD) extends the Museum’s mission by offering Southern artisans and designers a platform from which to showcase and sell their work, and connects the field of craft to Museum visitors through vibrant programming throughout the year.
The CSCD features a monthly workshop series called Craft Happy Hour and presents a quarterly Artist Spotlight exhibition, showcasing leaders in craft fields of jewelry, ceramics, glassworks, woodworks, metalworks and textiles, while highlighting the important place of craft at the heart of Southern Art.
Since 2008, the CSCD has also presented the annual juried exhibition, Art of the Cup, which celebrates the aesthetic and design freedom the ceramic medium offers to enhance everyday routine and highlights the diverse methods artisans use to blur the boundaries of form and function.
