Together, the works consider how memory travels, shifts across places, and continues to exist through material and sensory experience, holding onto what remains even after leaving.

Anna Boothe and Nancy Cohen’s newest collaborative project, Confluence, integrates their research into southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey’s rich glass history, the region’s current scientific glass industry, and the local river system and environs that have played a central role, initially in the 1700s, by providing the necessary materials and distribution capabilities in the growth of this signature industry.

Craft in America is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit arts organization founded in 2004 with the mission to promote and advance original handcrafted work through programs in all media. The Peabody Award-winning, Emmy-nominated Craft in America documentary series first aired nationally on PBS in 2007 and has produced over 35 hour-long episodes to date. These programs are filled with artists, techniques, and stories from diverse cultures, blending history with living practice.
In addition to the series, Craft in America’s organizational efforts include its extensive website, a YouTube channel, multi-disciplinary educator guides that adhere to national standards, and the Craft in America Center in Los Angeles, which presents exhibitions, talks by artists and scholars, workshops, and K-12 school tours. All of Craft in America’s multimedia educational content is provided to the public at no charge.

Reverse glass painting, or Hinterglasmalerei, is an art form where the image is painted on the back of a glass sheet and viewed from the front.
Throughout the session on September 26, we will examine examples of the history of the craft and use acrylic paint, which dries quickly, and acrylic pens which work on glass. There will also be experimentation with the backgrounds using specialty papers and foils creating shimmering multi-dimensional effects.
